Evie is creative, curious and smart. So why is it difficult for her to focus on homework, keep track of things and even finish setting the table? Evie has ADHD, which stands for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. She and her family have been learning ways to help her stay focused.

Today Evie is excited. Her class is going to the zoo! She loves watching the animals. But the day brings several surprises. What does Evie have in common with the cheetahs, birds and otters — and the zookeeper? Find out as she learns to take pride in her strengths, manage her symptoms and enjoy life beyond ADHD.

“Children’s voices are rarely heard amid the complexity of modern medicine. That’s why every story in the My Life Beyond series stems from the imagination and experience of a Mayo Clinic patient. The books were developed through collaboration between these patients, Mayo Clinic physicians and author-illustrator Hey Gee. Through this unique lens of inspiring real-life experiences, the series explores how children view illness, challenges and recovery.”

Fredric Meyer (MD, Consultant, Department of Neurologic Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN; Executive Dean of Education Professor of Neurosurgery, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science)
James A. Levine (MD, PhD), Professor, President, Fondation Ipsen, Paris, France)

Evie is 11 years old and loves animals and math. She also enjoys playing with friends, creating stories, playing basketball, watching hockey and playing with her dog, Gus. She lives in Rochester, Minnesota with her parents, her brother and her dog. Evie has been learning to manage her ADHD since she was diagnosed in second grade after her parents noticed that focusing on reading, following directions, finishing tasks and especially remote learning were particularly challenging for her.
